Our place

The little girl crammed on the bus while the father paid the fare.

–Go sit in the back mamas. The little girl giggled and sat in one of the side seats of the bus. –Go to the back mamas. –I like it here, the little girl replied. –Ok sweetie, let’s sit here. She used an old man’s knee as support to climb to the seat. –Did you say excuse me, sweetie? No I forgot. Excuse me. And then she giggled again.

-I like the bus papa.
-You like it? It’s nice the bus. I just hope you don’t like it that much.
It was a hot afternoon and the man took off his blue handkerchief and dried the sweat in his forehead.
-I missed you mamas. I missed you so much. I love you, ok.

But the girl didn’t hear him. She was looking at the other people in the bus. They were all strange; some wore weird clothes, as if disguised for a themed party. She smirked. They were fun.

-I love you honey. And mommy loves you….And your other daddy loves you too.
-Mommy says you suck! The girl said while giggling.
-She said I sucked? Oh mamas, I need to talk to her. That’s nice. You’re crossing your legs. That’s proper. That’s very proper….

The bus announced the next stop and the little girl looked to one side, the father to the other. It was the first hot day of the summer, and the almighty sun already was making itself be heard in the bus.

-Papa, who are those people?
-I don’t know sweetie. They are people.
-I like them. I like the bus.
-You like the bus? You like being crowded with strange people? Ha, you’re funny. Hey, are you excited about going swimming tomorrow?
-Yes papa. I brought my swimming suit. It’s purple. But where are these people going?
-To their places sweetie, like we are going to our place. Everyone has a place, even if it’s small. My place will always be your place, ok? Are you tired mamas? Lie down.

As the little girl closed her eyes, the father looked away to the lonely streets of the town. It’s too hot outside, he thought.
